Global significance of oxygen and carbon isotope compositions of pedogenic carbonates since the Cretaceous

Few global syntheses of oxygen and carbon isotope composition pedogenic carbonates have been attempted, unlike marine carbonates. Pedogenic represent in-situ indicators the climate conditions prevailing on land. The ?18O ?13C values are controlled by local factors, many them not affecting largely used to probe changes. We compile isotopic data (N= 12,167) from Cretaceous Quaternary-aged paleosols identify potential trends through time tie possible controlling factors. While discrete events such as Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum clearly evidenced, our analysis reveals an increasing complexity in distribution vs Cenozoic. As could be expected, rise C4 plants induces a shift towards higher during Neogene Quaternary. also show that increase hypsometry plays major role aridity downwind orographic barriers. Finally, Quaternary, 3‰ is recorded both foraminifera suggesting may track signal.
